If your cabinet hardware, doors and drawers are beyond help or you just want a new style you can purchase doors and new cabinet hardware and keep your existing cabinet boxes.
Refinish: Refinishing your old cabinet doors requires a lot of hard work how much depends on the finish that is on the doors already. If you want to paint the doors it may not be necessary to remove the old finish completely it depends on the amount of old paint on them.
Step one remove the doors and drawer fronts that you wish to refinish if they were stained originally you will have to sand off the old finish. I recommend you start with 150 grit sand paper and work your down to 220. If the old cabinets have been painted you may want to look at a paint remover.
Be sure to fill any screw holes cracks prior to painting or staining.
Note when painting or staining you need to have proper ventilation and preferably a dust free environment.
Staining Your cabinets: there are many types of stains on the market today I prefer to use the Min wax line it is readily available in most all hardware stores. That being said I prefer to use the oil base line and then apply clear coat finish once the stain dries. A good polyurethane clear coat will give you years of hard service follow the direction on the can and you will get a good result.
